Audition Information

Audition Dates

  • Sunday, August 16: 6:00–8:00 PM*
  • Monday, August 17: 6:00–8:00 PM

*Children auditioning: Please plan to attend Sunday from 6:00–7:00 PM.

Please plan to stay for the entire audition time scheduled for your session. Auditions can be nerve-racking, and one of the best parts of the evening is being able to encourage and support one another throughout the process.


Because Sunday's audition time is divided, some individuals who audition on Sunday may be asked to return on Monday to read a portion of the script. This is  to give the directing team additional opportunities to see you with specific material.

If you are not asked to come the following day, does not automatically mean you are not considered to be part of the cast.


What to Prepare

Monologue

  • Prepare a monologue no longer than 3 minutes.
  • Memorization is encouraged but not required. Choose the approach that will allow you to best showcase your acting ability and performance skills.

Song

  • Prepare approximately 1½ minutes of a song that best demonstrates your vocal range and abilities.
  • Musical theatre selections or Disney songs are excellent choices. (Please, not "You're Welcome.")

What Is a Monologue?

A monologue is a speech delivered by a single character. It allows you to tell a story, express emotion, and demonstrate your acting skills without another actor on stage.

Why Do We Ask for a Monologue?


A prepared monologue gives you the opportunity to present material you've worked on and feel confident performing. It allows the directing team to see your character choices, emotional range, stage presence, and acting technique in a piece you've intentionally selected to highlight your strengths.

Planned Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsals are generally scheduled for:

  • Monday evenings
  • Tuesday evenings
  • Saturday mornings
  • Occasional Friday evenings, as needed

Not every cast member will be called to every rehearsal, especially during the early weeks of the rehearsal process. As we get closer to performances, rehearsal attendance will increase as scenes, music, and choreography come together.

Schedule Conflicts

We understand that you all have a life outside of this production and will work with most schedule conflicts during the early part of the rehearsal process. However, the final two weeks leading up to opening night are mandatory for all cast members. Because this is when the entire production comes together, absences during this period cannot be accommodated.


Please consider your availability carefully before auditioning and let us know of any known conflicts at auditions.

Rufus - The main protagonist- striving for something he can't define, a restless soul searching for God- (sings solo, heavy line load, stage age 20-50 with the help of makeup)

Young Rufus - sings solo, has lines, age range 8-12


Poppy Rufus - very old Rufus had a stroke, no lines must be able to sit still but be believable


Eliza - Rufus's mom, strong faith, prays for Rufus daily, sings solo


Uri - Polish Jew in hiding, man of great faith, sorrow and loss. (sings solo, medium line load, stage age 40-60)


Mara - Uri's daughter, angry and frightened (light line load, stage age 18-30)


Ginger - Becomes Rufus wife, does not care about fame or notoriety, light hearted and fun, sees something in Rufus (sings solo, dances, medium line load, stage age 18-30)

Ricky - veteran who hates war, but has found peace in Christ in spite of his own loss (medium lines, stage age 18-25)

Jennifer - Rufus's daughter, passionate about life, needs something to ground her after her parents separated. semi complex character slightly mirrors her father, has  attitude shift (moderate lines, stage age 18-30)

Holly - Rufus's granddaughter, takes care of old Rufus after stroke, loves her poppy (mid lines stage age 20-30)

Megan - Rufus's great granddaughter, loves her poppy and wants to include him in everything, loves imagining he was a great many things (medium lines, stage age 8-10)

Audition tips

Choose your audition pieces wisely. Like your selection! If YOU don’t like it, we can tell! 

We want to see character variation. If you can find three points in your monologue where emotion shifts, and you like it, its probably a good choice.

Do a well-rehearsed monologue. 

We can tell if it’s been practiced to pieces or only practiced for a day.


Make bold, interesting, motivated choices. Stretch yourself and take a risk, it will not make you look foolish, rather it will make you look fearless!  

So make bold and interesting choices! Show us your chops! On the flip side, don’t make wild, unmotivated choices, every action should have a motivation behind it.  

Unmotivated screaming, weeping, maniacal laughter, or randomly chosen physicalizations, for example, are not showing you to the best of your ability.  Also, bringing props is unnecessary.

Face forward so everyone in the room can see you. Speaking to an empty chair stage left or in complete profile stage right. Does not give us much! Please don’t look directly at the auditors. 

It makes us uncomfortable, and that’s the last thing you want. 


We stop thinking about you and your monologue and become fully

absorbed in the fact that you’re staring at us. 

We do not wish to be part of your scene; we want to watch you and take notes. 

Place your mark over the auditors’ heads.
